Our Story: From Kentucky Roots to a National Movement
The Kentucky Preparedness Network began with a simple yet powerful vision: to create a community where knowledge, resources, and skills could be shared to help everyone prepare for life's uncertainties. What started as a small group of like-minded individuals meeting in homes and local venues quickly grew into a statewide initiative.
We recognized early on that preparedness is more than just stockpiling supplies—it's about building strong connections, fostering resilience, and learning how to thrive under any circumstance. With a firm foundation rooted in Kentucky's history of self-reliance and community, we built a network of zonal chapters across the state, each focused on empowering local communities through education, training, and collaboration.
As our efforts in Kentucky flourished, we began receiving invitations to speak at larger preparedness events outside of the state. These opportunities allowed us to share our message with a broader audience and sparked a wave of interest from individuals across the country. Many attendees who didn’t live in Kentucky expressed a desire to join our network as satellite members.
The turning point came when a member suggested something bold: Why not create state chapters in other areas, with a national chapter to guide and support them? This idea resonated deeply with our mission, and from it, the National Preparedness Network was born.
By expanding our reach, we’ve built bridges across state lines, bringing together a diverse group of individuals united by a shared goal: to create a stronger, more prepared nation. Our story is one of grassroots efforts, a commitment to community, and the belief that preparedness is for everyone.
The journey from a regional network to a national movement has been incredible, and the story of the National Preparedness Network is still being written. We invite you to be a part of this growing legacy.
What is the National Preparedness Network?
The National Preparedness Network (NPN) is a nationwide organization committed to fostering a culture of readiness and resilience. By connecting individuals and communities passionate about preparedness, homesteading, survival, and self-reliance, the NPN creates opportunities to learn, collaborate, and contribute to building a more secure future. We believe that preparedness is not just a personal responsibility but a collective effort that strengthens entire communities.
In simple terms, we help people get ready for emergencies and tough times by learning together and supporting each other.
How Does the NPN Work?
The NPN operates through a structured network of state and zonal chapters, each working to address the unique needs of its members and communities. This decentralized model allows for localized action while maintaining national support and resources. The system is designed to empower chapters to adapt and thrive while contributing to the broader goals of the NPN. Here is a detailed look at how it works:

This decentralized model allows for localized action while maintaining national support and resources. The system is designed to empower chapters to adapt and thrive while contributing to the broader goals of the NPN. Here is a detailed look at how it works:
County Chapters
County chapters form the foundation of the NPN, functioning as local hubs where members can connect, collaborate, and address the immediate needs of their communities. These chapters are instrumental in creating a grassroots movement, ensuring that preparedness knowledge and resources are accessible to individuals at a local level.
Each county chapter is responsible for organizing events, workshops, and outreach programs tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities within their communities. For instance, a county prone to flooding might focus on flood preparedness workshops, while another in an agricultural area might emphasize sustainable farming practices. By maintaining a localized focus, county chapters empower members to take actionable steps that directly benefit their families and neighbors.
Leadership within county chapters typically includes a president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary, along with committee chairs for specific initiatives such as training, community outreach, or fundraising. These leaders work together to ensure the chapter operates efficiently and aligns with the broader goals of the NPN.
Zonal Chapters
Zonal chapters bring together multiple county chapters within a defined region, fostering collaboration and resource sharing across counties. By pooling expertise, manpower, and financial resources, zones can address regional challenges that extend beyond the capabilities of a single county chapter.
Zonal chapters play a pivotal role in providing intermediate support, acting as a bridge between the county and state levels. They coordinate large-scale training sessions, regional conferences, and inter-county drills, ensuring that all members have access to advanced knowledge and practical experience. Zones also facilitate communication among county chapters, encouraging the exchange of ideas, strategies, and best practices.
Leadership at the zonal level mirrors that of the county chapters but operates on a broader scale. Zonal leaders work closely with county chapter leaders to identify regional needs and develop cohesive plans to address them. They also represent their zones at state-level meetings, ensuring that the voices of individual counties are heard.
State Chapters
State chapters oversee all zonal and county chapters within their jurisdiction, providing strategic guidance, resources, and training to ensure alignment with the national organization’s goals. State chapters act as a unifying force, bringing together diverse communities under a shared vision of preparedness and resilience.
State chapters are responsible for:
-
Training and Certification: Organizing statewide training programs and certification courses to enhance the skills of members at all levels.
-
Resource Distribution: Allocating financial and material resources to zones and counties based on need and performance.
-
Policy Implementation: Ensuring that all chapters adhere to NPN’s policies and standards, fostering consistency and accountability.
-
Advocacy: Representing the interests of their members at the national level, advocating for resources, policy changes, and other support.
Leadership at the state level includes a state president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and various directors overseeing specific areas such as training, communications, and logistics. These leaders are elected or appointed based on their experience, commitment, and vision for the organization.
National Organization
At the apex of the NPN structure is the national organization, which provides the overarching vision, resources, and guidance for the entire network. The national level ensures that all chapters, regardless of size or location, have the support they need to thrive.
The responsibilities of the national organization include:
-
Strategic Vision: Developing and communicating the long-term goals and objectives of the NPN, ensuring the organization remains focused and effective.
-
Resource Allocation: Managing national finances, securing funding, and distributing resources to state chapters equitably.
-
Coordination of Large-Scale Initiatives: Organizing nationwide campaigns, such as disaster awareness months or preparedness challenges, that unify all members under a common purpose.
-
Knowledge Sharing: Facilitating the exchange of ideas, research, and best practices across state lines, enabling all members to benefit from collective expertise.
-
Financial Transparency: Establishing clear financial protocols and audits to ensure accountability at every level of the organization.
The national organization is led by a director (or national president), supported by a national executive board that includes vice presidents, treasurers, secretaries, and directors overseeing specific initiatives. This leadership team works tirelessly to ensure that the NPN remains a dynamic, impactful organization capable of meeting the challenges of an ever-changing world.
